Superintendent's Message
Alum Rock Union Elementary School District is a K-8 public school district located on the east side of San Jose, California. Our district’s 20 elementary schools and 6 middle schools are currently experiencing a transformation that began four years ago with a major focus on improving student achievement for all student subgroups in our district including Hispanics, English Learners, Socio-economically disadvantaged students, and students with special needs. The Board of Trustees and all district staff fully support the implementation of a rigorous, standards-based curricula in all content areas to ensure the success of all students.
Both district and site staff collaborates to develop and implement specific action plans for students’ high achievement. Over the past four years, we are proud to boast of our district’s Academic Performance Index (API) which has increased an amazing 66 points! This is a phenomenal rate of increased student achievement that is attributed to the vision, leadership, teamwork, and sheer dedication of our outstanding students, teachers, parents, and administrators. The attainment of higher academic achievement has paved the way for all students to realize their dreams of the future including making plans for succeeding in high school, beginning to seriously think about which colleges they will attend, and deciding upon career paths.
The district goals are examples of focused determination and strong emphasis on delivering a high quality instructional program for all students in the district. A plethora of positive changes have been implemented district wide at all 26 sites including standards-based instructional materials in all content areas, regular collaboration time for teachers, a comprehensive professional development program, and an assessment system that links local, state, and district assessments in order to drive the instructional programs. When one visits our schools, one quickly notices an atmosphere of collegiality among staff and a learning environment where students are happy and tackling the significant learnings of the day. All classrooms are extremely focused on teaching and learning, students are engaged in all learning activities, and our schools are orderly while promoting a sense of community.
Sincerely,
Jose L. Manzo
