Dear Parents and Students,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all back to L.U.C.H.A. for the 2008-2009 school year. I hope you all enjoyed wonderful summers and that you are ready to continue on our quest to break 900! 

Every year at L.U.C.H.A. we start the year with our annual Kick Off Barbecue. This year’s festivities will be taking place at L.U.C.H.A. on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please see the enclosed flyer to find out what we are asking your family to bring to the pot-luck. We will be starting promptly at 11:00 so please make sure that you are on-time. We have many items to cover and discuss and this will be the first time this year that we gather as an entire community. At the barbeque, you will have the opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher, the new teachers at L.U.C.H.A., review school expectations, participate in some whole group games and activities, and ask any questions that you might have regarding the school, YMCA the after-school program, and anything else. Please make sure that you don’t miss the 5^th Annual L.U.C.H.A. Kick-Off Barbecue! I look forward to seeing all of our families together!  

In addition, please keep in mind that the school uniform is an important expectation at L.U.C.H.A. It is imperative that your child is ready for the first day of school and they have black pants (skirts, shorts, and dresses are appropriate too as long as they are black – no sweatpants or knit pants will be permitted) and a white or gray collared shirt (polo shirts or button-up shirts are appropriate). The shirts will be on sale at the Kick Off Barbecue and we have included a list of local stores that sell black bottoms. We are also asking that if you have any outgrown uniform items at home, that you bring them to L.U.C.H.A. to donate to our clothes closet so that we can share them with another L.U.C.H.A. leader.

Finally, the first day of school is Wednesday, August 27^th, 2008. The school day will start at 8:00 am. Please make sure that your child is lined-up on the playground on-time and ready to participate in the L.U.C.H.A. Launch and all of the day’s learning activities. (The afternoon kindergarten students will start at 12:30 pm and will be dismissed at 5:30 pm.) Also, please keep in mind that there will be no after-school program during the first weeks of school. Consequently, the 1^st through 3^rd students will dismiss at 3:15 pm and the 4^th and 5^th graders will dismiss at 3:30 pm. Your students should also turn in their completed summer homework packets to their new teacher on the first day of school. Saturday school is scheduled for September 6, 2008 for all students (and their parents) who do not turn in the completed packet on the first day!

I am looking forward to a powerful and positive year at L.U.C.H.A. I look forward to seeing all of the returning and new families and students on August 23^rd at the L.U.C.H.A. Kick Off Barbecue. We do have a long waiting list of students who would like to join the L.U.C.H.A. community, so if your plans have changed, and you will not be attending L.U.C.H.A. next year, please let us know so that we can offer your spot to the next child on the waiting list. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will see you soon!!
