Foster Youth and Youth Who Are Homeless


McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (McKinney-Vento Act)
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act ensures that children who are considered homeless or in-transition have the same educational rights and protection as any other school children.
Eligibility - You or your child is considered homeless or in-transition if you do not live in a fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence, including:
- Shared housing due to loss of housing
- Living in cars, parks, sub-standard housing, hotels or motels
- Primary night-time residence is a public or private place not designed for regular sleeping accommodations for a human being
- Students awaiting foster care placement
- Migratory children living in the above circumstances
Alum Rock Union School District provides homeless and in-transition children with the following:
- Backpacks and school supplies
- School uniforms
- Transportation for educational use only (pre-qualification is required)
- Student enrollment assistance

If a student lives in any of the following situations:
- In a shelter, motel, vehicle, or campground;
- On the street, in an abandoned building, or doubled up with friends or relatives because the family cannot find or afford permanent housing
He or she has certain rights and protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act. Eligible students may receive assistance with school enrollment, transportation and other services. For qualification screening, contact Student Support Services at (408) 928-6555.
We kindly request that all families complete the attached Housing Questionnaire Affidavit. This form helps us determine whether your student may qualify for additional support services under Title I and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
All information shared on the form is confidential and is only reviewed by the appropriate district staff to ensure your child receives the support they are entitled to.
