Migrant Education


The MEP (Migrant Education Program) was established under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 and reauthorized under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001.  The MEP provides formula grants to State Educational Agencies (SEAs) to establish or improve education programs for migrant children. These grants assist States in improving educational opportunities for migrant children to help them succeed in the regular school program, meet the challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards that all children are expected to meet.

Children are eligible to receive MEP services if they meet the definition of “migratory child” and if the basis for their eligibility is properly recorded on a certificate of eligibility (COE).  A student qualifies for the Migrant Education Program if he or she has moved across school district boundaries with a migrant parent or guardian to obtain temporary or seasonal employment in an agricultural, fishing or food processing activity within the past three years.

Region 1 Migrant Education Program serves families by providing children of migrant workers supplementary health, academic, and support services.  In addition, there is an active component for parental involvement.
