Transitional Kindergarten

Alum Rock Union Elementary School District

SB 1381 was signed into law in California on September 30, 2010 to change the age when children can begin kindergarten. This law now requires that children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st in order to enroll in a kindergarten program.

This law also created transitional kindergarten, so children who turn 5 between September 2nd and December 2nd  will also have an opportunity to build their skills and abilities. Their time in transitional kindergarten will help them to succeed in kindergarten, to become leaders in the classroom, and to confidently navigate the school day routine. A transitional kindergarten program is defined as the first year of a two year kindergarten program. Children in the transitional kindergarten program will attend a regular kindergarten program the following year.
